European Optical and 5G/6G Network Security in Focus at ONDM Workshop

A dedicated workshop on “Securing European Optical and 5G/6G Networks: A Vertical Perspective from Infrastructure to Regulation” was held in the framework of ONDM, bringing together experts from academia, research, industry and regulatory bodies to discuss key cybersecurity challenges for next-generation communication networks.

The workshop focused on the security of modern European telecommunication infrastructures, with particular emphasis on MANO, O-RAN, and network services in the context of emerging cybersecurity threats. The discussions highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to network security, covering everything from infrastructure-level protection to policy and regulatory frameworks.

The programme featured contributions from distinguished speakers including Anna Tzanakaki, Maksymilian Furmann, Aggeliki Pragiati, Leyla Sadighi, and Aleksandra Knapińska, who presented complementary perspectives on the protection of optical, 5G and future 6G network environments.

Special attention was also given to the contribution of European research projects such as 5G-TACTIC, SUSTAINET, and CTIS4NIS, which aim to develop knowledge, methodologies and tools for strengthening the security, resilience and trustworthiness of advanced communication infrastructures.

The event provided an important platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration among researchers, technology providers, cybersecurity experts and regulatory representatives. It also underlined the strategic importance of coordinated European action in securing the evolution of optical and 5G/6G networks.
